Hostel

The Taruna Hostel is near the entrance of Taruna. It has seven single rooms, as well as common rooms, kitchen, laundry and bathrooms. There is no resident manager or cook.

Hostel Room Allocation

We give priority to students from overseas attending Taruna’s full-time programmes, and then domestic full-time students.

Rooms are allocated once the student has been accepted on a programme through confirmation from the Office Administrator.

During the block seminars and short courses, priority will be given to those flying in to the Hawkes Bay (International students and those from the South Island).

Once offered, students must confirm their acceptance of their hostel room by paying a bond (refer to table for bond charges). Students must state their arrival date and time.

The room occupancy contract has a section listing the contents/chattels in the room and any defects. It is in your interests to check this carefully as this will be checked when vacating the hostel. On or before leaving each student must arrange a room check with the Hostel Manager to ensure it is in satisfactory condition. When this is completed your bond will be returned.

Room Rental Rate

These are exclusive of food, towels and toiletries, but inclusive of electricity and telephone rental (not tolls), 1 set of bed linen and some cleaning products.

Rates:

Nightly or Casual Rate: $30 per night (or $160 per week, if staying 8 nights, which is the duration of a seminar)

Full Course in Advance: $95 per week, $200 bond requirement

Full Term in Advance: $100 per week, $300 bond requirement

Fortnightly in Advance: $120 per week, $300 bond requirement

Rent is to be paid to the Office Administrator. Any resident of the hostel intending to leave the hostel before the end of their course is required to give two weeks notice or 2 weeks’ rent in lieu. It is the occupant’s responsibility to make these payments.

Rent Rebate – Holidays

A full time resident student who plans to be away on holiday can ask for their room to be sublet. The Taruna Office Administrator will coordinate this arrangement, and if their room is used, the normal occupant will have that period of rent refunded.

Rent rebate – Teaching / Sections

For any weeks where a resident student is away on a scheduled teaching section which is outside Hawkes Bay – no rent will be charged if the occupant is prepared to make their room available for other users.  As long as the offer for use is made, rent will not be charged regardless of whether or not the room was actually used.

Phone and Tolls

Phone rental and local calls are included in the room rate.  There is a permanent toll bar, so those wishing to make toll calls will need to obtain their own Clearcard or Telecom Calling Card. Faxes can be sent by arrangement with the Taruna Office Administrator.

Internet

Internet is available to hostel residents at an extra cost which is agreed upon at the commencement of tenancy.  Short term visitors will need to purchase access login from the Taruna Office Administrator.
