Hostel Information

The Taruna College Hostel is near the entrance of Taruna College. It has seven single rooms, as well as common rooms, kitchen, laundry and bathrooms. There is no resident manager or cook but a nearby Caretaker. Cooking of meals and cleaning is the mutual responsibility of the group of residents/occupants.

Hostel Room Allocation
We give priority to overseas students attending Taruna College full-time courses. New Zealand full-time students have next priority. We like to see a mix of students from various courses in the hostel, not just from the first course to start. Rooms are allocated when a properly completed Application for Academic Entry form, requesting a room, is received. When the rooms reserved for a particular course have been allocated others may be provisionally allocated until required by students from later starting courses. Students who are provisionally allocated rooms will be required to vacate the room when needed by the next course.

Room Rental Rates
The room rates exclusive of linen, food and supplies, but inclusive of electricity and telephone rental (not tolls) and some cleaning products, are as follows:

* Weekly rate applies if staying 8 nights and longer.

Rent is to be paid to the Taruna College Office Administrator.

Any resident intending to leave the hostel before the end of their course is required to give two weeks notice or 2 weeks rent in lieu.

Rent rebate – Practicum / Sections
For any weeks where a student is away on a scheduled section or practicum which is outside of the Hawkes Bay - no rent will be charged if the occupant  is prepared to make their room available for other users, for example a participant attending a short and block course being held at Taruna.  As long as the offer for use is made, rent will not be charged regardless of whether or not the room was actually used.

Rent Rebate Holidays
During some of the scheduled holiday weeks Taruna College will offer short courses. It is common for participants on these short courses to request accommodation at Taruna, and students in the hostel who plan to be away on holiday can ask for their room to be sublet. The Taruna College Secretary will coordinate this arrangement, and when a short course participant uses a room, the normal occupant will have their rent refunded.

Hostel Room Acceptance
Students who have requested and been offered a room in the hostel must confirm their acceptance by posting a cheque for the bond, 14 days before their course begins. Students must state their arrival date and time.

The room occupancy contract has a section listing the contents/chattels in the room and any defects. It is in your interests to check this carefully as this will be checked when vacating the hostel. On or before leaving each student must arrange a room check with the Taruna College Secretary to ensure it is in satisfactory condition. When this is completed your bond will be returned.

Keys
Residents are provided with a key to their bedroom and the general living area. Lost keys will be replaced at the cost of $10. An emergency set of keys is kept by the Taruna College Caretaker.

Cleaning Products
Taruna College will provide Multi-Purpose cleaner, floor cleaner, mop heads, oven cleaner, pot scourers, toilet paper and soap..

Phone and Tolls
Phone rental and local calls are included in the room rate. The phone has a permanent toll bar, so those wishing to make toll calls will need to obtain their own Clearcard or Telecom Calling Card.
The Hostel phone number is ++64-6-877 5837.

Faxes can be sent by arrangement with the Taruna College.
